Abstract

A method of applying paint, varnish or other coating material to a surface of a ferromagnetic object, comprises magnetically uniformly adhering a mask or stencil in the form of a flexible sheet or foil with powdered permanent magnetic material incorporated therein and magnetized to a region of the said surface of the object to be coated and applying (e.g. by brushing, immersing or spraying) the coating material to the unmasked region. The mask may be a flexible sheet or foil of synthetic rubber, natural rubber or synthetic plastic material with a ferric oxide-barium oxide material incorporated therein. The mask may be magnetized such that one face is a south pole and the other face a north pole or so that adjacent strips on each of the two faces form north and south poles in alternation. Cylindrical bodies are coated.
