A gear finishing machine comprises a horizontal bed, a table movable horizontally on the bed, rotary gear support means on the table, a column extending upwardly from the bed, a cutter slide vertically movable on the column, a cutter head carried at the underside of the slide angularly adjustable about a vertical axis, rotary tool support means on the head, means for driving one of the rotary support means, a feed-screw and nut between the column and cutter slide, and motor-driven fast and slow transmission means for the feed-screw and nut. The machine is as described in Specification 953,401. In a modification, Figs. 16-19, the gear finishing machine comprises a slide 416, movable by a feed-screw 422 driven by a motor 420, and preferably a crowning table 436, and the work is carried in centres 444, 446, and is driven by the tool T. Work G is loaded into the centres by arms 460 which are pivoted by a fluid actuated piston 459. Tool slide 474 is moved vertically by a feed nut and screw 478, 476, the screw being driven at fast traverse, or slow feeding rates from a shaft 486. Motor 490, Fig. 16, drives a worm 492, worm-wheels 494, 496, and shafts 498, 504. A worm 500 on shaft 498 co-operating with a worm-wheel 502 on shaft 486, and bevel gears 506, 508, co-operate, so that depending on the position of a clutch element 510, the fast or slow feed rate is transmitted to feed-screw 476. The feed is controlled by switches 524-529, and in a modification, Fig. 19, two feed-screws 476a are provided. Balance weights 544 are provided and tool T is rotated by a motor 568, through gears 560, worm gear 556, 557, and gears 572, 576, 578, 580. In a further modification, the crowning table is replaced by a work-support 436a, angularly adjustable by a worm and wheel.
