In an axial-flow blower, compressor or the like, impeller blades 4 and diffuser blades 6 are adjusted in pitch, simultaneously or separately, by means of an electric motor 59. The motor 59 drives a shaft 45 through either of two sets of double-reduction worm gearing 60 or 601, the latter providing a more rapid adjustment for emergency use; the set of gearing to be used is coupled to the shaft 45 by a dog clutch 50 actuated by a servomotor 54. Shaft 45 is connected through bevel gearing 421 and splines to a vertical shaft which can be moved axially by means of a servomotor 104, 105 to engage a dog clutch connecting it to a shaft 261 whereby the pitch-adjusting pinions 71 of the diffuser blades 6 are rotated by a common gear ring 69. To adjust the impeller blades 4, a bevel gear 24 concentric with the impeller shaft is brought up to the speed of the impeller shaft by means of a motor 41 connected through bevel gears 39, 39a, to the planet carrier 44a of a differential gear 44, a sun gear 47 of which is connected through bevel gears 42, 37, shaft 26 and bevel gear 25 to the bevel gear 24. Bevel gear 24 is then coupled by a servomotor-actuated dog clutch 88 to a gear wheel 19 carried by the impeller. Motor 59 is then started in the required direction to drive shaft 45 which rotates the other sun gear 48 of the differential gear 44 to vary the speed of gear wheel 19 to a value above or below that of the impeller shaft, whereby the gear wheel 19 is caused to rotate relative to the impeller, thereby causing the pitch-adjusting pinion 14 of each impeller blade 4 to rotate relative to the impeller. Shafts 26 and 261 may be arranged to be moved axially to bring bevel gears 24, 25 and 241, 251 into or out of mesh, the associated dog clutches then being omitted. The electric motors may be replaced by fluid-actuated motors.
