Abstract

The invention comprises a mixed ester of 1,1,1-trimethylol ethane in which two hydroxy groups are esterified with the same or two different straight chain C4-6 alkanoic acids and the other hydroxyl group is esterified with a straight chain C7-10 alkanoic acid, the ester having a molecular weight of from 390 to 460. The invention also comprises the product obtainable by esterifying the triol with a mixture of about 2 equivalents of one or more of the C4-6 acids and about 1 equivalent of one or more of the C7-10 acids, the product having a molecular weight of from 390 to 460. The esters may be made by mixing the triol with the acids and then heating until reaction is complete or reacting the triol with one acid and then reacting the partial ester formed with the other acid or acids. Solvents and a catalyst or active carbon may be present. The preparation is described of the trimethylol ethane divalerate mono pelargonate, dibutyrate mono pelargonate, divalerate mono heptanoate, divalerate mono caprylate, dicaproate mono heptanoate and dicaproate mono pelargonate. The compounds may be used in lubricating compositions (see Division C5). Specification 715,933 is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise a major proportion by weight of one or more esters of 1,1,1-trimethylol ethane in which two hydroxy groups are esterified with the same or two different straight chain C4- 6 alkanoic acids and one hydroxy group is esterified with a straight chain C7- 10 alkanoic acid, the esters having a molecular weight of from 390 to 460. The esters may be in the form obtained by reacting the triol with a mixture of about two equivalents of one or more of the C4- 6 alkanoic acids and about one equivalent of the C7- 10 alkanoic acids, the product having a molecular weight of from 390 to 460. The esters may be blended with other polyhydric esters, mineral oils or grease-making soaps and antioxidants, e.g. phenothiazine, phenyl a -naphthylamine or 2,21-dipyridylamine.
