Abstract

A polymeric composition suitable for use in contact with copper comprises a polymer of propylene and as stabilizer therefor a mixture of (a) a phenolic antioxidant, (b) a non-volatile, primary or secondary, aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amino-compound, said secondary aromatic amino compound having at least one nitrogen atom to which is attached not more than one aryl group, and optionally (c) an organic sulphur compound of molecular weight at least 250. The polymer may be a homopolymer of propylene or a copolymer thereof with ethylene, butene, 3-methyl-butene-1 or 4-methyl-pentene-1. The Specification discloses a wide range of components (a), (b) and (c), and in the examples illustrates the use of the following; (c) dilauryl-b -thiodipropionate, dilauryl-b -thiodibutyrate, dihexadecylsulphide and octadecyl mercaptan, (b)p-amino-acetanilide, sebacic dihydrazide, p,p1-diamino-diphenyl methane, octadecylamine, diethanolamine, decamethylene diamine and diethylene triamine, (a) thio bis (3-methyl-6-t-butyl phenol), p-nonylphenol/acetone condensate and condensates of 3-methyl-6-t-butylphenol with crotonaldehyde or cinnamaldehyde. The composition also may contain U.V. light stabilizers, calcium and zinc soaps (e.g. calcium stearate), pigments, dyes and fillers (e.g. carbon black). The applications specified are wire, mouldings and condensers. Specifications 796,285, 859,773, 951,931, 951,933 and 951,934 are referred to.
