Abstract

Detergent alkylate is obtained by alkylating benzene in the presence of hydrogen fluoride with olefins obtained by chlorinating C10-C17 paraffins containing at least 95% normal paraffins to effect not more than 35% conversion followed by dehydrochlorination. The feed preferably contains paraffins differing in chain length by not more than 5 carbon atoms and is chlorinated in the liquid phase at 0-200 DEG C. in the presence of a peroxide, U.V. light or cobalt - 60. Dehydrochlorination is effected in the gaseous phase at 150-500 DEG C. and not more than 2 atmospheres without a catalyst or in the presence of silica-alumina previously heated to above 750 DEG C. or of boron phosphate. Alternatively liquid phase is used at up to 250 DEG C. using a catalyst or aqueous alkali. Unconverted paraffins act as diluent or other diluents may be added. After conventional alkylation distillation separates benzene and unreacted paraffins for recycle, detergent alkylate and heavy alkylate. When using feeds differing in chain length by only 1 or 2 carbon atoms, the chlorinated product may be separated from unreacted hydrocarbons by distillation before the dehydrochlorination.
