A pneumatically-operated guillotine comprises a frame, pneumatic cylinders on the frame, a blade supporting member movable on the frame and coupled to the cylinders, a blade mounted on the supporting member, a fixed blade on the frame, and a foot operated air valve to actuate the cylinders. The machine frame comprises end plates 2, a front plate 3 and a pipe 4 which also acts as an air receiver. Two pneumatic cylinders 7 are pivoted to lugs 6 mounted on the pipe and operate levers 15 connected to a rocker shaft 8 pivoted in the end plates 2. Short arms 16 mounted on the rocker shaft are connected by links 17 to blade arms 19 which are journalled in bearings 20, adjustably mounted on the end plates. The blade arms 19 are connected by a member 26 which adjustably supports a blade 27 which co-operates with a fixed blade 28 mounted on the frame. To each of the blade arms are connected return springs 31 which are anchored on the end plates. The frame has a transverse clamp member 33 disposed above the fixed blade 28 and this member is surrounded by a number of spring return clamp loops 34 operable by an expansion air tube 35 to clamp a panel to be cut firmly on to the blade 28. The blade 27 can be adjusted relative to the fixed blade 28 by the mountings of the bearings 20 and by adjusting bolts 37. A foot pedal 52 operates an air valve 40 which admits air first to the clamp tube 35, then to one of the cylinders 7 and finally to the second cylinder. To assist the return stroke of the blade, a one-way valve 45 is connected to the valve 40 so that when it moves to the exhaust position the one-way valve 45 permits air to pass to the piston-rod side of the piston until the pressure is equal to the pressure in the cylinders 7.
