A plurality of strips of fabric are treated so as to provide the fabric with a high degree of stretchability and elasticity by feeding the strips of fabric from separate reels over a common roller to form a composite multilayer strip, continuously feeding the composite strip in a free loop form through a shrinking fluid bath at a rate sufficient to prevent any shrinking of the fabric in the bath, and supporting the composite strip in such a manner as to permit its unrestricted shrinking in all directions as it is fed from the bath. The strip may be supported on a vibratory conveyer while it shrinks, the shrinking bath may be caustic and the composite strip may be washed and coloured. Referring to Fig. 1 a plurality of reels 8, 9, 10 and 11 carry identical fabrics which are brought together and passed between rollers 21 and 22 the degree of wrap-round roller 22 being adjustable by weight 28 and then in the form of a tensionless free loop under follower roller 42,between rollers 30 and 31 where excess solution is removed and finally on to a conveyer 50 which may be isolated so that the fabric shrinks in an unrestricted manner. Rollers 22 and 31 are coupled to a motor 32 and the follower roller is arranged to reduce via an electrical circuit the speed of roller 31 when the free loop grows too small.
