Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises (A) a major proportional of an oil of lubricating viscosity, (B) from 0.1-45 % wt. of an N-substituted C30-200 alkenyl succinimide, and (C) from 0.01-2 % wt. of a polyamine or a fatty acid salt thereof, said polyamine having the formula <FORM:0958910/C3/1> where X is -OH or -NH2, n is 0 or 1, and q is a number from 0 to 10, the succinimide/polyamine weight ratio being in the range from 3.0 : 1 to 100 : 1. Suitable succinimides include those represented by the general formulae <FORM:0958910/C3/2> <FORM:0958910/C3/3> where Z is monoalkylene diamine or polyalkylene polyamine radical, Y is a divalent radical derived from Z, and R is a C30-200 alkenyl radical. Y and Z may also be derived from heterocyclic amines such as amino-alkyl piperazines. Fatty acids which may be used to form salts of the polyamine (additive (C)) range from acetic to stearic and higher fatty acids. Typical additives (C) include diethylenetriamine, hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine and tetraethylenepentamine monostearate, many others being listed. Any polyolefin produced as an impurity when the succinimide derivatives are prepared may remain in the final lubricating composition. The oils of lubricating viscosity are the usual types including mineral and other hydrocarbon oils including alkylene polymers, alkylene oxide-type polymers and derivatives thereof, dicarboxylic acid esters, liquid esters of acids of phosphorus, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, alkyl biphenyl ethers, silicates and poly siloxanes. Examples of these oils are given, but the compositions of the specific examples are all based in mineral oils. Specification 934,401, 942,818 and 956,802 are referred to.
