Abstract
An alcohol or a mixture of alcohols containing at least 2 carbon atoms is prepared by contacting an aluminium trialkyl in which each alkyl radical contains at least 2 carbon atoms with an oxygen-containing gas, in which the oxygen partial pressure is in the range from 1 to 10 p.s.i.a., in a first stage so that only 2 of the aluminium-carbon bonds are oxidized; contacting in a second stage the product from the first stage with an oxygen-containing gas in which the oxygen partial pressure is higher than that in the first stage and is in the range from 5 to 75 p.s.i.a., the temperature in each stage being from -25 DEG C. to 150 DEG C.; and hydrolysing the resultant aluminium alcoholate and recovering the alcohol or mixture of alcohols so obtained. An organic inert diluent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon, a C5-C8 paraffin, a halogenated hydrocarbon or an ether, may be present during the reaction. The aluminium trialkyl used as starting material may be obtained by reacting a C2-C4 aluminium trialkyl with ethylene or by reacting a higher olefine with an aluminium trialkyl having low alkyl groups.
