A self-propellable toy comprises support means, a target on said support means to be struck from at least two directions, and means for sensing the striking of and direction from which said target is struck and for launching a return missile toward the direction from which said target is struck. The toy takes the form of a monster 19 as in Fig. 1, having feet 25, arms 23 and a movable tail 35 bearing a target portion 37, an apertured hump 39 containing projectiles 41, a head 27 and a movable tongue 33. In operation, a mains switch 293 is actuated and providing a missile 41 is in position on the shaft 145, maintaining the missile switch 219 closed, the monster is propelled forward by drive mechanism 43 consisting of a gear train 67, 69, 87, 89 and 75 driven by an electric motor 73. If the target 37 is struck from the left the tail is displaced, causing the monster to retreat and turn through 90 degrees, through actuation of cam 113 moving a lever 105 to reverse gearwheel 69 through a slide 101. Simultaneously, clutch means 149 is engaged opening the switch 219 to fire a missile 41, and sounds are produced by vibration of a rod 427 on a box 421 (Fig. 4). The monster moves to the right similarly if the tail is struck on the right side. If the tongue 33 strikes an obstacle, tongue switch 319 is closed actuating a control mechanism 49 to produce a reversal movement and a sound, but the clutch means 149 remains disengaged and a missile is not fired in this case.
