Abstract
Linear amorphous, high molecular weight, elastomeric copolymers of a diolefin having at least one terminal double bond separated from the other double bond by more than two carbon atoms, with ethylene and an alpha-olefin are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a hydrocarbon-soluble catalyst obtained from hydrocarbon-soluble vanadium compounds in which at least one of the metal valencies is saturated by an oxygen atom bound to an organic group, and an alkyl aluminium halide or beryllium alkyl halide or mixture thereof. The copolymers consist of macromolecules which contain units of the diene, and of each olefin, and show unsaturation only in the side groups. Specified non-conjugated diolefins are pentadiene-1, 4, 2-methyl-1, 4-pentadiene, 1, 5-hexadiene, 2-methyl-1, 5-hexadiene, 2-phenyl-1, 5-hexadiene, 1, 4-hexadiene, 1, 4-heptadiene, 1, 5-heptadiene, 2 methyl-1, 6-heptadiene, 1, 6-heptadiene, 1, 5-octadiene, 2, 6-dimethyl-1, 7-octadiene, and 3, 7-dimethyl-1, 6-octadiene. Preferred vanadium compounds are vanadium triacetylacetonate, vanadyl diacetylacetonate, vanadyl-halogen-acetylacetonates, and vanadyl-trialkoxides and-halogen alkoxides. The catalyst and polymerization is preferably effected at a temperature between 0 and -80 DEG C. If a temperature of from 0 DEG to 125 DEG C. is used a complexing agent is added to the catalyst such as an ether or thio-ether. The catalyst may be preformed or prepared in the presence of the monomers. The alpha-olefin may be propylene or butene-1. The monomers may contain small amounts of hydrogen. The polymerization may be effected in a continuous manner, and the polymers recovered by conventional techniques. The copolymers may be vulcanized.
