A portable cordless electric drill comprises a gear case 14 and a battery housing 11 secured to a field housing 12, the housing 11 containing batteries 16, a battery recharger device 17, and a pivoted switch assembly 19. The motor 20 comprises a permanent magnet 35, and an armature assembly, including a shaft 42, an integrally-moulded insulating plastics body forming sleeves 43, 43a joined by a portion 44, and a stationary ferrous core 37, secured to gear-case end plate 13.
