Abstract
A continuous process for preparing concentrated hydrochloric acid comprising contacting a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen chloride in countercurrent with water in an adiabatic absorption tower, with drawing hydrochloric acid from the absorption tower and treating a portion thereof in a desorption apparatus so as to generate dilute hydrochloric acid and a gaseous effluent containing a major proportion of hydrogen chloride, and contacting said gaseous effluent with the remainder of the hydrochloric acid withdrawn from the tower in an absorption apparatus with simultaneous cooling so as to form concentrated hydrochloric acid. In Fig. 1 the waste gases enter the packed tower 2 through inlet 1. Absorption water is added through conduit 3, and HCl of 32% strength and at 78 DEG C. is discharged to sump 4. Part of this acid is conveyed by pump 5 into an evaporator 6 where it is decomposed into a vapour containing 85% HCl and an acid of 30% HCl. The evaporator consists of a reservoir 7 for the acid, a falling film heat exchanger 8 and a packed hollow cylinder 9. The vapour containing 85% HCl flows through a conduit 12 into exchanger 14 where the vapours are absorbed with simultaneous cooling by mea of residual HCl of 32% to form acid of 38% which collects in reservoir 16. The excess HCl vapours are returned via 15 into the tower at 17 about 500 mm. above the lower end of the <PICT:0956608/C1/1> column 2, which distance corresponds to a theoretical tray. The rate of supply of water to the adiabatic absorption tower 2 may be controlled in correspondence with variation in the rate of supply of hydrogen chloride in the gaseous mixture and concentration of acid discharged from the tower 2, and the rate of passage of cooling liquid through the absorption apparatus may be varied in inverse correspondence with variation in concentration of the acid discharged therefrom.
