Abstract
956,322. Rivets. OLYMPIC SCREW & RIVET CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961; July 31, 1961], No. 2982/62. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] A tubular rivet comprises a section 22 of reduced thickness which, upon drawing in the setting pin 14 and applying axial pressure to the rivet-head 20, is crimped radially inwards into locking engagement with the pin 14. The pin has annular grooves 38 and axial ribs 44 against which the reduced section is crimped, a " break-neck " 34 and a grooved pulling-end 40 for engagement by the tool 60, which may have a tapered bore 66 for contracting the end of the head 20. The rivet-bore has a cylindrical section 26 and a polygonal (e.g. square) section P which splits along the internal axial edges during setting, forming petals 50, 51. The break-neck may be such as to discontinue the setting operation at the stage shown in Fig. 6, or it may hold until the end of the head has been crimped, Fig. 8, which may be effected without the tapered bore 66, Fig. 11 (not shown). The rivet and the setting pin may be made of aluminium alloy. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 786,997.
