Abstract
956,288. Liquid fuel burners. GULF OIL (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. Jan. 19, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 2140/61. Heading F4T. A burner comprises a liquid fuel spray nozzle 30 disposed on the axis of a perforated tube 12 surrounded by a tubular housing 10. The end of the perforated tube 12 remote from the nozzle is either disposed in line with the end of the housing 10 or extends therebeyond and is closed by a perforated cap. The cross-sectional area of the perforated tube 12 may decrease gradually or in steps in a direction away from or towards the nozzle. The spacing between the perforated tube 12, and the housing 10 is maintained by sets of radial lugs 16 on the perforated tube 12. The perforated tube 12 is secured by a bolt 24 to the housing 10, the bolt passing through a slot 20 in a bracket 18 secured to the perforated tube 12, a hole in a ring 22 supporting the nozzle and a slot 26 in the housing 10. The nozzle, Fig. 6, comprises a tubular body 34 into which is screwed a swirl stem 50 having a frustoconical end 60 engaging a complementary surface on an inner orifice plate 58 abutting at its periphery against an outer orifice plate 56 engaging a lip 36 on the body 34. The two orifice plates are spaced except at their peripheries and liquid fuel passages 74, 76 connect the space between the orifice plates to a fuel pipe 78. Air at low pressure is supplied by a pipe 46 and passes along an axial passage 52 and a radial passage 54 in the swirl stem 50 to the annular space between the stem and the body 34. Inclined slots 82 on the frusto-conical end 60 of the stem convey the air to a swirl chamber 68 from which it discharges through the aligned orifices of the orifice plates 56, 58 and causes fuel to be aspirated into the nozzle from a supply which may be disposed at a level a few centimetres below the nozzle.
