Abstract
A sterilizing composition in tablet form which on addition to water effervesces and completely and readily dissolves therein comprises a germicidal compound which on contact with water yields chlorine and an effervescing agent. Specified germicides are sodium and potassium dichloroisocyanurate and monochloroisocyanurate, trichloroisocyanuric acid, 1 : 3-dichloro 5 : 5-dimethylhydantoin, chloramine T or chlorinated trisodium phosphate. The effervescing agent may comprise a solid organic carboxylic acid, e.g. tartaric, citric and gluconic acid and an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate. The composition may also contain binders, lubricants and fillers, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol/ethylene oxide condensate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulphate, coconut fatty acid esters of sodium isethionate, gum arabic and sodium chloride.
