Abstract
955,868. Garment patterns. N. L. RAWLINGS. Dec. 12, 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961], No. 44539/61. Heading A3V. The invention comprises a transparent block pattern and a method of forming a graded garment pattern from such transparent block pattern. The method comprises marking two mutually inclined lines on a surface on which the garment pattern is to be formed, thereby defining datum lines, placing a transparent block pattern on the surface, bringing two reference lines on the block pattern into coincidence with the two datum lines, moving the block pattern through predetermined distances along the datum lines to position the block pattern in successive different spaced relationships to the datum lines so as successively to establish the position of key points of the graded pattern and connecting the key points on the surface to provide on the sheet the graded pattern. The block pattern has bevelled edges 12, and is made of semirigid transparent plastics. Reference lines, a bust line 32 and grain line 31 are marked on the block pattern and a grid of spaced lines is marked parallel to the reference lines defining a scale with which to measure the successive different positions of the block. To mark out a pattern the block pattern is placed on the material on which the pattern is to be marked so that the datum lines coincide with the reference lines 31, 32 of the pattern block. The periphery of the block pattern is then marked on the material. To vary the size of the pattern the block pattern is moved in successive steps with different components of the grid coinciding with the datum lines and the pattern traced in steps. To make a pattern a size larger, the bust line 32 is placed # inch above the corresponding datum line and the centre line 13, neck point 14, and lower part of the neck are traced. The block pattern is moved so that line 36a coincides with the datum line. The neck point 16 and the neck line are drawn. Line 39a is then placed on the corresponding datum line, shoulder point 18, upper part of armhole and the shoulder line are drawn. The bust line 32 is then placed on the corresponding datum line and the lower arm point 20 and the armhole are drawn. The grid line 37a is then placed on the corresponding datum line and the top of the underarm is traced. The bust line 32 is placed # inch below corresponding datum line and the side line 21 and part of the waist line is drawn. The centre line 13 is moved # inch to the left of the centre line on the material and the waist line is drawn. The bust line 32 is brought into coincidence with the corresponding datum line and waist dart point 30 is marked. The block is removed and the pattern completed marking dart lines from point 30 to notches 28 and 28a. Block patterns are similarly constructed for skirts and sleeves.
