Abstract

A feed for ruminant animals comprises at least one cellulosic roughage component and from 0.1 to 20%, preferably from 1 to 10%, by weight of an alkali metal salt of tall oil fatty acids, preferably the sodium salt. The cellulosic roughage component, which should be present in excess of 2% by weight but may amount to 60% or more, may be hay, straw, cottonseed hulls, cotton mill wastes, beet pulp, silage, ground maize cobs, maize stalks, oats, barley, cereal grains and cereal middlings, or mixtures of any of these. The feed may include from 0.001 to 0.1% of an anti-oxidant which is non-toxic to ruminants; the Specification discloses a substantial number of suitable anti-oxidants, but of these 6-ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline is preferred. A concentrate suitable for addition to high caloric animal feed comprises from 10 to 99% by weight of an alkali metal salt of tall oil fatty acids and from 0.01 to 0.5% of an anti-oxidant non-toxic to ruminants. The feeds may contain other specified ingredients, including natural fats and oils, such as maize oils, soybean oils, cottonseed oil and tallow. In comparative examples, the feed efficiency of the sodium salt of tall oil fatty acids is compared inter alia with that for the tall oil fatty acids themselves.
