954,909. Measuring electrically. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 7, 1961 [April 9,1960], No.12712/60. Heading G1N. A hygrometer comprises a pair of electrodes, e.g. of semi-conducting tin oxide, deposited on a glass plate 3 (Fig.1) and separated by a small insulating gap, the glass plate is thermo-electrically cooled by being mounted on a copper plate 13 which is connected between P and N type semi-conducting elements 6 and 7 through which current is passed from battery 11. In operation current is passed through elements 6 and 7 to cool plate 13 and cause a deposit of dew to form to bridge the gap between the electrodes on plate 3, when this is indicated by suitable means connected to the electrodes by leads 5, the temperature of the plate is measured by thermocouple 15 which may be connected in series with a second thermocouple 16 exposed to the ambient temperature to give an indication of relative humidity. Copper terminals 8 and 9 are made relatively massive in order to give fast dissipation of heat generated at these points, alternatively they may be cooled by passing liquid through internal cooling passages. The semi-conducting elements 6 and 7 may be of bismuth telluride.
