Abstract

954,199. Ratchet clutches. A. MAURER. April 22, 1960 [April 25, 1959; Dec. 22, 1959], No. 14189/60. Heading F2C. In a sprag-type one-way clutch each sprag is maintained in contact with the races by an associated individual lightweight torsion coil spring having two free arms, one of which engages the sprag at a point eccentric to its tilting axis to exert a torque thereon, while the other engages the coil spring of an adjacent sprag. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the sprags 3 are of the form described in Specification 814,786, and each is provided with a bore 4 coaxial with its tilting axis for the reception of a helical spring 5 with arms 6, 10 projecting from one end, the short one 6 engaging the side 7 of a slot in the face of the sprag, while the other 10 has a bent-over end portion 11 inserted in the bore of an adjacent sprag. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the short arm 24 of each spring has a bent-over end 25 engaging the edge of the associated sprag, the long arm 27 being formed at the opposite end of the coiled portion 21. In a third form, Fig. 5, each spring coil 50 is mounted on a pin 51 projecting from the side of the sprag.
