Abstract

A copolymer of ethylene and butene-1 is formed by contacting an olefinic reactant comprising ethylene and not more than 10% (by volume of ethylene) of butene-1 under polymerization conditions and in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst formed by mixing (1) a trihalide of a Group 4A or 5A metal (Mendel<\>aeef Table) and (2) either a Group 2B organometallic compound MRa(OR)bXc or a Group 3B organo-metallic compound MRd(OR)eXf where M is the metal atom, R is a hydrocarbon radical, X is a halogen atom, "a" is 1 or 2, "b" and "c" are 0 or 1, "d" is 1, 2 or 3 and "e" and "f" are 0, 1 or 2. The preferred component (1) is titanium trichloride, preferably gamma titanium trichloride which may be formed by mixing titanium tetrachloride and an aluminium trialkyl in an inert organic solvent from which the resulting titanium trichloride is precipitated and in proportions such that the Al:Ti atomic ratio in the mixture is between 0.3 and 0.5, and then heating the mixture above 120 DEG C. A suitable catalyst for the invention can be obtained by removing the gamma titanium trichloride from the mixture and mixing it, preferably in the presence of a solvent, with a component (2) as above, or the catalyst can be formed by merely adding the component (2) to the mixture containing gamma titanium trichloride. The organometallic compound of the Group 2B or 3B metal can for example be an alkyl, alkoxide, aryloxide or alkyl halide thereof. The preferred Group 2B metal is zinc and the preferred Group 3B metal is aluminium, the preferred aluminium compound being an alkylaluminium monochloride. The ethylene, butene-1 and hydrogen may be supplied as a single gaseous feed stream to the reactor or they may be added separately or the butene-1 may be added with the ethylene. In the examples the amount of hydrogen added varies between 5 and 15% by volume of the total gaseous feed. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 810,023 and 943,937 are referred to.
