Abstract

Metals or alloys from the group the oxides of which have heats of formation at 27 DEG C. within the range 30 to 105 kilocals. per gram atom of oxygen (i.e. Cu, Cd, Tl, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, Ni, Co, Fe, Mo, W, Re, In, Zn, Cr. Mn, Nb, Te, Si, V, Ti), or alloys at least one constituent of which is from that group, have their properties improved by the incorporation therein of submicron particles of one or more refractory oxides having a melting point above 1000 DEG C. and a heat of formation at 1000 DEG C. in excess of 60 kilocals per gram-atom of oxygen, (i.e. Y2O3, CaO, La2O3, BeO, ThO2, MgO, UO2, HfO2, CeO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, BaO, ZrSiO4, TiO, TiO2, SIO2, Ta2O5, V2O3, NbO2, Cr2O3, including also silicates, titanates vanadates, chromates, zirconates and spinels), and preferably at least 52+ 0.016M. where M. is the melting point of the metal or alloy in DEG K. The composition is produced by depositing a hydrous oxygen-containing compound of the metal to be improved together with substantially discrete particles of compounds which when heated to constant weight at 1500 DEG C. form the refractory oxide or oxides, reducing the hydrous compounds to metal while maintaining a temperature below the sintering temperature of the metal or alloy to form a powder product, sintering the said product until its surface area is less than 10 square meters/gram, mixing the sintered powder dispersion with metal powder, sintering the mixture to form a product having a density 60-100% of its absolute density, and hot working. The ratio of dispersion: metal powder may be 0.3:1 to 2.5:1 by volume, and the ratio of refractory oxide: metal in the dispersion may be up to 1 : 1 by volume, but is generally 0.01-0.35 : 1. The hydrous compounds of the metal or metals may be precipitated from a solution of their salts on to the refractory oxide in the form of an aquasol.
