Abstract
941,870. Combustion chamber walls; water tube steam boilers; hot water boilers; heat exchange elements. CLEAVER-BROOKS CO. Sept. 13, 1962 [Jan. 11, 1962], No. 34980/62. Headings F4A, F4B and F4S. In a package boiler having a combustion chamber casing enclosing a number of water tubes above a combustion chamber partially enclosed by fire bricks, the fire bricks are supported from beneath, the upper parts of the bricks are engaged by the casing and at least one tube abuts the upper part of at least one of the bricks. Serpentine tubes 58, Fig. 2, connected at both ends to a header box 56 are enclosed by a casing above burners 42 surrounded by fire bricks 140. The bricks 140 rest in channels 144, 146, Fig. 5, supported above the skirt 38 of the boiler housing by inverted channels 148. The side walls 160 of the combustion chamber casing engage the top outer edges of the bricks 140, Fig. 12, and the lower bend of the outer tube 58a and the next adjacent tube 58b engage the upper faces and the upper parts of the inner faces of the bricks respectively. The return bends of the lowermost tubes maintain the rear firebricks against a flange formed on the rear wall of the casing, and the front edges of the bricks abut the face of the header tank 56. Air for combustion enters louvres 40 in the housing skirt 38, and the flue outlet 46 terminates above a hole in the combustion chamber casing 52. The boiler may provide hot water for radiators 14, Fig. 1, from the header tank 56, domestic hot water from a second outlet from the tank 56 and water for a heated swimming pool 12 from tubes immersed in the tank 56. The return bends 64 of the serpentine tubes 58 are oval in crosssection, and adjacent tubes are staggered vertically, Fig. 13, 14, so that their main runs are spaced apart. The tubes of the immersed bundles 90, Figs. 8, 9, are also spaced apart by oval return bands, and a cover-plate 94 for holes in the header box top plate 73 is formed with integral headers 103, 105 and inlet and outlet connections 102, 104. Support plates for the tube bundles form baffles within the header tank and cleaning doors are provided on the front wall. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the holes in the header tank top plate are used for connections to a steam drum mounted above the boiler housing. A pump 122, Fig. 11, mounted on the front of the header tank has its impeller 124 surrounded by a shroud 130 connected to a baffle 126 within the header tank.
