Abstract

940,564. Protective arrangements. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. March 20, 1962 [Aug. 21, 1961], No. 30058/61. Heading H2K. [Also in Divisions G4 and H1] In a protective or alarm arrangement for a cable 1, the cable is provided with a small bore tube 6 extending substantially throughout the length of the cable. The tube 6 is closed at one end 10, is connected at the other end to a volume-responsive switch 11 and contains a liquid, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, which boils at the maximum permissible operating temperature of the cable. When the liquid boils, the switch 11, which may be float or diaphragm operated, completes a circuit for a detecting device (not shown) which may be an alarm. In the case of a cable route comprising at least two cable lengths in tandem, each length is provided with a small bore tube 6 and a volume responsive switch 11. The switches are connected across twin auxiliary conductors 9 which are provided in all but the last cable length, the twin conductors being in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge circuit containing the detector, Fig. 1 (not shown).
