Abstract

949,003. Riveted joints. TOWNSEND CO. May 8, 1962 [May 12, 1961], No. 17679/62. Heading B3U. [Also in Division F2] In a blind rivet assembly comprising a tubular rivet with a shank 1 and bore 6 which is inserted through holes 2 in plates 3, the rivet head 4 abuts the accessible side of the plates and the tail 5 projects through to the blind side. A mandrel 7 with head 8 on the blind side extends through the bore of the tubular rivet with the head 8 adjacent the tail 5 of the shank 1. The mandrel head has a frustoconical portion 9 and a flat face 11 parallel with the mandrel axis. The completed assembly is formed by applying pressure, by means of a known riveting device, to hold the head 4 against the accessible side of the plates and exert a pulling force on the mandrel 7 to pull the head 8 into the tail 5 of the tubular shank. This action produces spreading of the tail of the tubular shank which as it bears against the axially flat face 11 of the mandrel head is drawn around this face so as to form a retaining lip 13. The mandrel shank is adapted by means of groove 14 to break off in line with the rivet head 4 when the assembly is effectively formed. In another embodiment an alternative form of mandrel head is shown resulting in a larger overlap of the lip to produce a firmer grip when the joint is formed.
