Abstract

947,884. Pulse generating circuits; controlled non-linear inductor circuits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 1, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 12592/61. Headings H3B and H3P. In a pulse generator of the type in which a charged delay line is discharged into a load via a switching device, the pulse duration is made adjustable by means of a saturable core reactor connected to a different part of the delay line and triggered so as to discharge part of the line at a time which is adjustable in dependence on the duration of the required pulse in the load. Fig. 1 shows a known circuit in which delay line 1, having a transit time T/2 is charged from a D.C. supply 2. A trigger pulse on line 3 is delayed by period T/2 before being fed to the thyratron S1 to discharge line 1 into load 10. A further thyratron S2 with an auxiliary load R is provided, the firing time being adjustable by means of a variable delay unit 7. It is shown that if the delay introduced by unit 7 is adjusted between the limits O and T the pulse duration in load 10 is adjusted between the limits O and T. Fig. 2 (not shown) relates to a similar circuit in which the thyratrons are replaced by saturable core reactors which reach saturation level at different times in dependence on adjustable current in control windings. In Fig. 3, the thyratron S3 is connected to the common point of the capacitors of line 1 (Fig. 1) whilst the second thyratron is replaced by a saturable reactor P3. The pulse duration in load 10 is dependent on the relative time of firing thyratron S3 and reactor P3, the latter being controlled by the value of variable current from source 13.
