Abstract
A polymeric material, particularly an ion-exchange material is made by contacting a fluoropolymer containing units of the general formula: <FORM:0947578/C3/1> in which Z represents a halogen or hydrogen atom with ethylenically unsaturated monomeric material in liquid phase which is polymerized by means of a free-radical catalyst, whereby the polymerized monomer is distributed throughout the polymer. Fluoropolymers specified are polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, and a vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluorethylene copolymer. The fluoropolymer may be in the form of a film, powder, aqueous emulsion or emulsion coagulate. Monomers specified are styrene and substituted styrenes, allyl amines, vinyl heterocyclic amines, ethylenic sulphonic acids, and ethylenic carboxylic acids and their salts, esters, amides, nitriles and anhydrides. Free-radical catalysts specified are persulphates and peroxides e.g. benzoyl peroxide. The action of the catalyst may be supplemented by the action of heat, ionizing radiation or ultra-violet light. If the resulting material does not contain ion-exchange groups, these may be introduced by appropriate treatment. The examples describe the following processes; (1) immersing a film of polytetrafluorethylene in styrene containing benzoyl peroxide followed by sulphonation of the polymerized material; (2) as in (1) but with the sulphonation treatment replaced by chloromethylation and amination with N-methylpiperidene; (4) styrene is polymerized in an aqueous emulsion of polytetrafluorethylene, the product being formed into a film and sulphonated; (5) a mixture of powdered polytetrafluorethylene and 2-vinyl-5-ethyl-pyridine is polymerized, the product being formed into a film and treated with trimethylene chlorobromide; and (6) a mixture of styrene and an aqueous emulsion of a chlorotrifluoroethylene-vinylidene chloride copolymer is polymerized with the aid of potassium persulphate, the emulsion is coagulated, the product formed into a film and then sulphonated.
