Abstract

<FORM:0946143/C2/1> Potassium organo-boron and/or organo-aluminium complex compounds are obtained by reacting melts or solutions of the sodium compounds with potassium amalgam. The products are useful as electrolytes in the electrolytic production of a metal alkyl, e.g. tetraethyl lead and triethyl aluminium. Compounds used include:-Na[AlR4], Na[AlR3H], Na[AlR3OR1], Na[AlR3X], Na[Al2R6X], Na[BR4], Na[BR3H], Na[BRnOR1m] in which R and R1 are hydrocarbon radicals, X is F, CN, or N3, and n and m together equal 4 and may be 0 or an integer from 1 to 4. In the drawing sodium hydride is formed in reactor 1 from sodium and hydrogen. This is treated with trialkyl aluminium and then ethylene to give sodium tetraalkyl aluminium. This is passed to exchanger 3 in which it is passed in counter current to a sodium amalgam containing some potassium to produce potassium tetraalkyl aluminium which is then passed to electrolytic cell 6. Electrolysis gives trialkyl aluminium and potassium in the amalgam. If a lead anode is used tetraalkyl lead would be produced. The amalgam is recycled to exchanger 3. To prevent overconcentrating the amalgam with sodium, a portion is cycled through cell 11 and the sodium obtained is then returned to reactor 1, the mercury being returned to cell 6. 3/4 of the trialkyl aluminium is recycled, the remainder being withdrawn.ALSO:In the production of metal alkyls by electrolysis, the electrolyte consists of complex aluminium-organic and boron-organic compounds of potassium which are obtained by treating the corresponding sodium compounds with potassium amalgam. In the production of trialkyl aluminium, a compound K[AlR4] is electrolyzed between an aluminium anode and a sodium amalgam cathode. Trialkyl aluminium is obtained at the cathode while the amalgam, now containing potassium, is recycled through an exchanger containing Na[AlR4] at such a rate that the potassium content of the mercury is below 0.1% and the sodium content at 0.5-1%. In the production of tetraalkyl lead, the electrolyte may be a mixture of K[Al(C2H5)4] and K[Al(C2H5)3F] to form tetraethyl lead and K[Al2(C2H5)6F] at the lead anode and potassium amalgam at the cathode. After separating off tetraethyl lead the electrolyte is regenerated by treatment with sodium hydride, ethylene and is stirred with the potassium amalgam at such a rate as to maintain the potassium and sodium concentrations in the amalgam at the values stated above. To prevent overconcentrating the amalgam with sodium a second cell may be used to remove sodium.
