In a window having balanced movable sashes each of the fixed frame sides comprises two main parts, viz. an outer part 1, 6, Fig. 2, 3 Fig. 3, for mounting in a building structure and an inner part 8, 11, Fig. 2, 12, Fig. 3, e.g. of aluminium mounted within the outer parts as by the edges 4, 7, of the outer parts engaging resiliently abutments 5, 9 on the inner parts, the upper horizontal outer member 1, Fig. 2 housing a suspension unit 2 for the sashes B1, B2 and their associated counter-weights 10, Fig. 3 connected to the sashes by cables 32 secured to the upper corners of the sashes by block 26 and which move in the vertical hollow rails 3, the sashes being guided by the blocks 36; in guides 25 provided in the profiled jambs 12. Each sash has rails 18, Fig. 5, having grooved seatings 19 for slides 20 which engage with grooves of the plastics rectangular blocks 36, Fig. 5, which lock the rails 18 to the stiles 22, and each rail 18 is fastened to the stiles by shaped blocks on the rail (Fig. 4, not shown) having projecting prismatic lugs forcibly marked into the glazing grooves of the stile. The meeting edges 30, 31 of the upper and lower sashes are inclined complimentarily and each meeting rail has a synthethic plastics gasket 23, 24 engaging with the opposing surface of the other rail, whilst the other two rails of the sashes engage with gaskets 28, 29 in the head and sill inner parts.
