Abstract

Coatings of foamed polyurethanes are applied to cardboard, mild steel, aluminium, wood or concrete, by spraying with polyurethane-forming reactants comprising an organic polyisocyanate, a polyether which contains at least two hydroxyl groups and one tertiary amino group, and optionally water, and in addition, a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. Preferred block copolymers contain between 10 and 80% by weight of polyoxyethylene units in the molecule and polypropylene oxide components of molecular weight between 800 and 2500. Suitable copolymers are described in Specification 731,603 and U.S.A. Specification 2,674,619. In examples four successive layers of foam are applied to a sheet of cardboard by spraying with mixtures of a triethanolamine/propylene oxide condensate of M.W. 400, tri(b -chlorethyl)phosphate, water, block copolymers of ethylene and propylene oxides and a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition from the phosgenation of crude diaminodiphenylmethane. Similar results were obtained when the cardboard was replaced by mild steel, aluminium, wood or concrete. Specification 901,175 also is referred to.ALSO:An improvement or modification of the process claimed in Claim 6 of the parent Specification comprises the incorporation into the reaction mixture from which the foam is made of a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. Preferred block copolymers contain between 10% and 80% by weight of polyoxyethylene units in the molecule and polypropylene oxide components of the molecule having a molecular weight between 800 and 2,500. Suitable copolymers are described in Specification 731,603 and U.S.A. Specification 2,674,619. In examples four successive layers of foam are applied to a sheet of cardboard by spraying with mixtures of a triethanolamine/propylene oxide condensate of M.W. 400, tri-(b -chlorethyl) phosphate, water, block copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxides and a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition from the phosgenation of crude diaminodiphenylmethane. Other reactants and additives are specified as in the main Specification. Specification 901,175 also is referred to.ALSO:An improvement or modification of the process claimed in claim 6 of the parent Specification comprises the incorporation into the reaction mixture from which the foam is made of a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. Other reactants and additives as in the main specification are given. Specification 901,175 also is referred to.
