Abstract
932,955. Reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 42220/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XIII] Heat transfer between an ionized gas and a surface is improved by creating a periodic electric field particularly in the vicinity of the surface to set in motion ions of the gas near the surface, a dielectric barrier being provided between the electrodes used for creating the field to reduce the risk of an arc discharge being struck. The barrier may consist of any suitable insulating material. The invention is said to be applicable to all gases and in particular to air, nitrogen, oxygen, rare gases, carbon dioxide and hydrogen and under conditions of turbulent or laminar flow or natural convection. In one application (Fig. 4) to a nuclear reactor, a potential difference is set up between the metal sheath 7 of a nuclear fuel element 8 and the moderator 9 or a metal wall 10 of a duct containing the element, the dielectric barrier 11 being placed between the electrodes to prevent an arc discharge. In a further application (Fig. 5) to a nuclear reactor the metal sheath 7 of the fuel element 8 and the moderator 9 are both earthed and auxiliary conductors 12 each surrounded by a dielectric barrier 13 are introduced in the vicinity of element 8 so as to produce on the surface of said fuel element, the alternating or modulated field required.
