Abstract

932,698. Clutch combinations. BORG. WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1960 [Feb. 5, 1959; March 13, 1959], No. 3318/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A torque converter assembly comprises a housing 2, 3 an axially movable pressure plate 27 dividing the interior of the housing into a chamber 41 for a clutch 23 and a chamber 42 for a converter 7, a selector valve DV for directing fluid pressure from a source P into the clutch chamber to disengage the clutch or into the converter chamber to engage the clutch, restricted orifice means 32 in the pressure plate affording communication between the chambers and unidirectional valve means 29 controlling the restricted orifice means to permit fluid communication between the chambers when the selector valve directs the fluid to the clutch chamber whereby the clutch is disengaged and the converter charged simultaneously. The pressure plate is constrained to rotate with the housing by lugs 38 engaging the heads of studs 5 and is axially movable on a hub 12 which carries the turbine blades 8 of the converter and is splined to an output sleeve 13 connected to the gearing of the transmission. The sleeve 13 is disposed within a stationary sleeve 16 supporting a one-way clutch 15, such as described in Specification 763,353, carrying the reactor blades 9, and the sleeve 16 is disposed within a driving sleeve 11 connected to the housing 2, 3 and impeller blades 6. A central shaft 13, connected to the output of the transmission, is supported in a bearing 21 and carries the hub 22 of a clutch and vibration damper assembly 23, such as described in Specification 872,676. A passage 43 between the shaft 19 and sleeve 13 and a passage 44 between the sleeves 13, 16 are joined by passages 24, 18 to the clutch and converter chambers 41, 42 and to the selector valve DV which is connected to a pump P and reservoir, which may be those of the engine driving the assembly. When the selector valve is positioned, as shown, to connect the pump to the passage 43 and chamber 41, the pressure plate is moved to disengage the clutch and fluid can pass through the restricted orifices to the chamber 42 to fill the converter by lifting the unidirectional valve means, which consists of a resilient plate 29 in a groove in a bearing 25 for the pressure plate, away from the orifices, the pressure drop across the orifices ensuring that the plate moves. Fluid can at the same time leave the converter chamber through the passages 18, 14 and the valve DV, but the resistance to flow effected by the passage 44 maintains the pressure in the converter chamber at the required operative level. When the selector valve is positioned to connect the pump to the passage 44 and chamber 42, the fluid moves the plate 27 to engage the clutch and the resilient plate 29 prevents flow of fluid from the converter chamber to the clutch chamber. A relief valve RV controls the pressure of fluid supplied to the pump.
