Abstract

932,218. Clamps. SPEED TOOLS Ltd. Sept. 6, 1961 [Aug. 22, 1960], No. 28976/60. Addition to 821,132. Class 61. [Also in Group XXV] An improvement in or modification of the clamp of the parent Specification consists in providing pin and elongated guide means in the toggle linkage by which the member has imparted thereto a movement having two or more differently directed components whereby the clamping member or a part thereof is directed away from the longitudinal axis of the clamp during the unclamping movement. In a clamp applied to a closure member for a vat container, Fig. 1, the toggle operating linkage connecting the toggle operating arm 25 and the clamping member 16 includes a rigid lever link 22 pivoted at one end on a pin 23 secured to the body 6 and at the other end to a link 24 which comprises the base of the arm 25. In a clamp for gripping a sack in a laundry trolley, Fig. 3, the rigid lever link 24 is pivoted at one end to the clamping member 3 and at the other end to the base of the operating arm 25. As shown, the guide means comprises two longitudinally spaced slots 9, 10 in the body plates, which cooperate with pins 14, 15 in the clamping member 3, each slot having at least a part aligned with the longitudinal axis of the clamp, the slot 10 having a front part 12 inclined to the longitudinal axis. The cranked arm 16 of the member 3 is covered with plastic material 18. The operative head of the member 3 comprises the head of a screw 19. In a modification, Fig. 8, a pair of metal body plates 6 is provided with open longitudinal slots 40, a cam member 47 being disposed at the open end of the slot, the cam surface 46 being adapted to be engaged by a pin 15 on the clamping member. In other modifications each slot is closed and one or each has an inclined portion. The inclined portions of the slots are inclined in the same or in opposite directions. In another modification an open front slot having divergent sides is provided, the pin being held against the inclined side by spring means.
