Abstract

932,007. Shoe stiffeners. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958; June 1, 1959; Oct. 20, 1959], No. 40137/59. Class 17 (2). [Also in Group VIII] Sheet material, capable of being converted to a stiff condition by treatment with a volatile solvent, comprises an intimate mixture of coalescible particles soluble in a volatile organic solvent and fibres, the fibrous content of the mixture being not less than one sixth and not more than one half by weight, in clinging engagement with a reinforcing fabric due to interspersion of fibres of the mixture with fibres of the fabric. The fibres may be of cotton, nylon, jute, hemp, hair, wool, kraft or sulphite pulp or asbestos. The coalescible particles may be of polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate or modified rosin, and may be made by pulverizing scrap. The fabric may be woven or unwoven, of rayon, cotton or hemp. As shown, a furnish of kraft pulp beaten in a Hollander and polystyrene beads is introduced into the vat 50 of a cylinder-type paper-making machine. The mesh of the paper-making screen may be larger than the particles in the mixture. Tobacco cloth 42 from a roll 74 is passed around a roller 76 resting on the screen of the cylinder 68. The water of the furnish passes through the fabric to the interior of the cylinder, leaving a layer of fibres and resin particles on the cloth. The resulting reinforced paper is couched by the roll 78 and carried by the felt 80 to a drying apparatus (not shown). The white water in the cylinder 68 is withdrawn by a pump and passed to a mixing device 86 where it is used to dilute fresh furnish for supply to the flow box 52 of the machine. The supply of fabric may then be discontinued, so that unreinforced paper is formed. The fabric surface of the composite sheet is coated with an adhesive comprising dextrin, borax, NaOH and water and bonded thereby to the unreinforced paper. In other embodiments an additional web of unwoven fabric is bonded by adhesive to the mixture side of the composite sheet; the fabric side of the composite sheet is coated with a cement containing neoprene, urea-formaldehyde resin, curing agent and solvent, and before the cement dries flock-particles of rayon fibre are applied; and the fabric side is spotted with solvent from a knurled roll to give local coalescence of the polystyrene particles, a cloth having a flock layer bonded to it by a rubber adhesive is then bonded to the fabric side of the composite sheet by a neoprene latex composition. The products may be subsequently rolled to smooth them and reduce their thickness. They may be cut and skived to form shoe stiffeners.
