931,039. Fluid friction brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 34319/60. Class 103 (1). [Also in Groups XIII and XXIX] A braking system for vehicles comprises an hydrostatic brake 14 and a heat exchanger, e.g. a radiator 11, to dissipate the heat generated in a liquid circuit by the brake 14, wherein automatically operating means 27 are provided to vary the quantity of liquid in the brake 14 in response to a change in temperature of the liquid so as to limit the temperature to a predetermined maximum. Fluid from pump 20 normally passes through a manually operated throttle valve 24 before flowing into brake 14. However, if the outlet fluid from brake 14 rises above a predetermined maximum temperature, fluid passing through the control valve 27 operates thermostat bellows 45 in chamber 33 thus actuating spring-loaded valve plunger 38 to open a circuit 25, 26 by-passing the throttle valve 24. In a second embodiment the throttle valve is replaced by a cut-off valve controlling fluid in the normal cooling circuit and through the control valve 27. A further embodiment is described whereby a valve, controlled by compressed air, and a thermostatic device actuates a piston in the brake liquid circuit so that a greater amount of liquid circulates in the brake system. This system comprises a heat exchanger coupled to the engine cooling system.
