Abstract
930,737. Determining moisture content. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF HER MAJESTY'S CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Aug. 31, 1960 [Sept. 2, 1959], No. 30059/60. Class 37. [Also in Croup XXXVIII] A sweating rate indicator comprises a box 1, Fig. 1, open on one side and provided with a resilient gasket member, not shown, in order that it may be placed on the body surface of an animal, the box being provided with a humiditysensitive resistor 2 consisting of a plastic sheet provided with inter-digitated electrodes 3 and 4, together with means for establishing a flow of gas through the box at a controlled rate. In operation the box is applied to the body surface of the animal and the rate of flow of the gas adjusted to give a predetermined resistance of the humidity sensitive resistor when the rate of flow of gas is proportional to the sweating rate of the animal. The rate of flow of gas may be adjusted manually, or automatically by connecting the humidity sensitive resistor in a bridge circuit and using the unbalance voltage of the bridge circuit to drive a servomotor controlling a valve in the gas supply. Fig. 5 shows an alternative form of humidity sensitive resistor in which the distance between the electrodes is variable in which case the flow of gas through the apparatus may be maintained constant and the spacing between the electrodes adjusted for the predetermined resistance value when the spacing between the electrodes, indicated on scale 28, will be a function of the sweating rate. Apparatus for calibrating the sweating rate indicator.-Fig. 4 comprises a gas flow control valve 13, drier 14 containing e.g. cone. H 2 SO 4 or silica gel, the enclosure 1 containing the humidity sensitive resistor, a rotameter for indicating the gas flow, and a moisture collecting device 16 arranged on the arm of a balance 18 in order that the rate at which moisture is withdrawn from the enclosure 1 may be measured. Ohmmeter 19 indicates the resistance of the humidity sensitive resistor.
