Abstract

A porous construction unit has an integral moulded facing layer of a composition comprising 50 to 95% of a granular mineral filler and 50 to 5% of a cured polymer containing a polymer of a 1,3-diolefine having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, said polymer containing at least 30% of its unsaturation in the form of side vinyl groups, said cured polymer consisting of homopolymers of said diolefine or copolymers of said diolefine with up to 50% of styrene or ring lower alkyl substituted styrenes, said percentages being based on the total of filler and cured polymer. The unit may be a block made from slag, cinders, cement, concrete, clay, foamed glass or foamed plastics. The polymer of the diolefin may be cross-linked with styrene, substituted styrenes, vinyl esters, acrylic acid derivatives or cinnamaldehyde; as curing agent, an azo compound or peroxide or other per-compound may be used. Coated sand. The granular mineral filler may be sand, gravel, flint or granular calcium carbonate (e.g. marble). It may be coated with a silane or siloxane containing ethylenic unsaturation, an allyl silicate, or a Werner-type methacrylate chromic chloride complex, and heated, prior to inclusion in the composition.ALSO:A porous construction unit has an integral moulded facing layer of a composition comprising 50 to 95% of a granular mineral filler and 50 to 5% of a cured polymer containing a polymer of a 1,3-diolefine having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, said polymer containing at least 30% of its unsaturation in the form of side vinyl groups, said cured polymer consisting of homopolymers of said diolefine or copolymers of said diolefine with up to 50% of styrene or ring lower alkyl substituted styrenes, said percentages being based on the total of filler and cured polymer.
