Abstract

Calcareous phosphate ore is upgraded by calcining and wet slaking after which the calcium hydroxide is separated from the phosphate concentrate as a slurry. The calcium hydroxide which carries with it some of the phosphate ore is reacted with ammonium chloride solution or solid to form calcium chloride and ammonia in solutions. Residual phosphate is removed for example by filtration. The solution is then heated to remove the ammonia which is passed into solutions containing magnesium chloride thus precipitating magnesium hydroxide and forming ammonium chloride in solution, as in the parent Specification. The mixture is then filtered and the ammonium chloride liquor is either evaporated to dryness or added as such to further calcium hydroxide. The wet slaking is preferably carried out at the boil and the resultant slurry may be concentrated to a solid:liquid ratio between 1:4 and 1:5 in which case the ammonium chloride is added as a solid, or it may be evaporated to dryness in which case ammonium chloride liquor is employed.
