Abstract

939,529. Diaphragm pumps. KIGASS Ltd. Nov. 2, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958; May 2, 1959], Nos. 34919/58 and 15065/59. Class 102(1). A bellows pump comprises a bellows 2, Fig. 1, preferably of nylon, having a closed end 2a and an open end 2b which is clamped to the end of a housing 1 by a liner 4. The closed end of the bellows is urged against a plunger 14 either by its only resilience or by a spring 12 and the end 9 of the housing contains inlet and outlet valves 31, 19 respectively. A non-leak valve may be provided in the form of a plug 23 having a stem extending through a port 22 which stem is contacted by the bellows during the delivery stroke. The spring 24 of the leak valve is stronger than that of the outlet valve 19. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the plunger is arranged to be locked at its inner position. The plunger 14c is hollow and houses a piston 39 having a slot 42 and a groove 37a which fixes in grooves of a boss formed on the end of the bellows so that the plunger may rotate relatively to the bellows. A collar 44 is fixed to the end of the plunger 14c by a pin 41 passing through the slot 42, and the collar carries two rollers 46 which engage in slots 48 of the liner 4b. When the plunger is to be locked the plunger is actuated and the end of the bellows engages the spigot 11 and seals the port 22, after which the plunger is further depressed and moves relatively to the piston 39, the plunger can then be rotated and the rollers moved into circumferential slots leading from the slot 38. In a modification, the collar 44 and piston 39 are omitted and the plunger is formed with a threaded portion which screws into the end of the housing to lock the plunger at the end of its outward stroke as in Fig. 2 (not shown), in this embodiment the non-leak valve is retained.
