Abstract
Anion-exchange resins of polymers of substances of formulae:-<FORM:0939518/IV(a)/1> where at least three of the substituents R in each monomer molecule is allyl or methallyl and the remaining substituents R may be hydrogen or lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n is 0 or 1, m is 2 or 3 and X is a chloride or nitrate anion are prepared by polymerization as aqueous solutions at a pH of not more than 2 at between 30 DEG and 110 DEG C. in the presence of a watersoluble free radical initiator. Ammonium persulphate is the preferred initiator although hydrogen peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide and 2-21-azobispropionamidine dihydrochloride are also specified. A sulphite or bisulphite of an alkali metal may be used as an activator. The pH may be adjusted using hydrochloric acid. Trialkylamine hydrochloride and tetra-allyl-ethylenediamine dihydrochloride are specified monomers.
