An end fitting applied to a flexible hose of rubber or like material comprises an insert H which can be fitted into the bore of the hose E and a ferrule G fitted over the outer surface of the hose. The insert H has a plurality of peripheral grooves C of rectangular cross-section the depths of which are more than one third of their width and into which the rubber of the hose is forced by contraction in the diameter of the ferrule e.g. by swaging so that the rubber constitutes a plurality of rings sealing against leakage along the meeting surfaces of the hose and the insert. As shown, the ferrule has near its outer end a groove F leaving a reduced thickness of metal which registers with a projection A on the insert: the ferrule is also counter bored at G<SP>a</SP> in line with a tapered part D of the insert. The outer covering of rubber is removed from the end of the hose to a point beyond the grooves C. When the ferrule is swaged down from the condition shown in the lower half of the drawing to that in the upper half, the inner layer of rubber will flow into the grooves C forming rectangular section sealing rings and the reduced thickness of the ferrule left by the groove F will wrap itself about the projection A and clamp the reinforcement. The projection A may be part circular cross-section or " square " on the left-hand side to lock the reinforcement behind the projection. The groove F in the ferrule may be in the internal surface. When the reinforcement is of a textile nature and it is undesirable to expose it the ferrule is reduced in diameter at a zone in register with the grooves and to a generous radius to avoid setting up a sharp bend in the reinforcement. This construction can also be used with a hose in which the outer layer of rubber can be removed. The latter is replaced by a sleeve of soft metal which, when the ferrule is reduced in diameter, will flow and embed itself into the reinforcement and peripheral grooves formed in the internal surface of the ferrule.
