Abstract

938,972. Transmission and distribution networks. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 12, 1962 [May 3, 1961], No. 16038/61. Class 38 (4). An impedance link between two alternating current networks 1, 2 comprises an inductor or transductor 3 and a capacitor 4 which are tuned to the network frequency so as to have a low impedance. When a fault condition arises such as a short circuit in one of the networks the voltage across the capacitor 4 increases whereupon the spark gap 8 breaks down to energize a coil 6 which closes contact 5 to short circuit the capacitor 4, the link impedance then being that of the inductor 3 only. During fault conditions the difference in voltage between the networks energizes a relay 9 to open contacts 10 so that the coil 7 associated with the contact 5 cannot be energized. Upon the disappearance of the fault condition the relay 9 becomes deenergized and, after a time delay, contacts 10 close to energize the coil 7 to open contact 5 thereby removing the short circuit from the capacitor 4 to return the link to its low impedance state.
