Abstract

938,951. Feeding tobacco. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 24, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 39922/59. Class 130. [Also in Groups I and VIII] Tobacco leaf or like material is fed by an air stream through passage 210 to a shredder comprising rotary cutters 200, 202, having cutting ridges 201 thereon, the air being directed through passages 220, 222, before the tobacco reaches the cutters. Suction may be applied to the passages 220, 222, to provide the air stream in passage 210. The cutters rotate at speeds exceeding 300 feet per second, at which speeds they operate through a boundary layer of compressed air carried round by the edges. The ridges 201 may be replaced by cutting discs and the cutter may comprise a single rotary member operating against a stationary counterface.
