Abstract
A material suitable for use in upholstery comprises fragments of resilient polyurethane foam bonded together by means of an isocyanate-type resilient cellular bonding agent derived by a single stage process. By an "isocyanate-type resilient cellular bonding agent" is meant one derived from an organic isocyanate and an organic chain compound which will react with it giving a polyurethane. The invention also comprises a method of bonding together fragments of resilient polyurethane foam by mixing them with a bonding mixture of a polymer containing terminal hydroxyl groups, a polyisocyanate and an accelerator, shaping the product and heating with steam, the steam coming into contact with the mixture. Fragments of other resilient cellular materials (e.g. foam rubber) may be incorporated in addition to the polyurethane foam fragments. Suitable accelerators are (a) triethylene diamine, its homologues and analogues in which phosphorus replaces nitrogen and (b) esters, alkyl esters and salts of the metals of Group IV, V and VI of the Periodic System. In examples: (1) and (2) polyester polyurethane foam fragments are mixed with polypropylene glycol, toluene diisocyanate and dibutyl tin dilaurate. The mixture is poured into a slitted mould and exposed to saturated steam; (3) polyether polyurethane foam fragments are bonded similarly, using a mixture of an ethylene oxide tipped polymer of ethylene diamine and propylene oxide, toluene diisocyanate and stannous iso-octoate.ALSO:A material suitable for use in upholstery comprises fragments of resilient polyurethane foam bonded together by means of an isocyanatetype resilient cellular bonding agent derived by a single stage process.
