Abstract
A paste-form pigment concentrate having a viscosity of 70 to 140 Krebs units, consists of 10 to 50% by volume of a pigment, 40 to 75% by volume of a solvent consisting of diacetone alcohol or an alkyl ether derived from an ethylene or propylene glycol or polyglycol having from 2 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule and a monohydric alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, or acetic, propionic or butyric esters of the said glycols, or mixtures of such solvents and 10 to 25% by volume of a combined wetting agent containing (a) soya lecithin, (b) a high temperature condensate of a dialkanolamine, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and a fatty acid with at least 8 carbon atoms in its molecule, and (c) an ester, having a molecular weight between 200 and 400, of polyethylene glycol and a fatty acid with 12 to 18 carbon atoms in its molecule. Pigments mentioned include lamp black, phthalocyanine blue and green, ultramarine blue, chromium oxide, iron oxide pigments, natural earth pigments, organic reds and maroons, chrome yellow, titanium dioxide and talc. Examples of the pastes are given, and of their addition to white and inert-pigmented oil paints, styrene butadiene latex paints and alkyd resin paints, with all of which they are compatible.ALSO:A paste-form pigment concentrate, which may be added to oil, latex and alkyd resin paints, consists of a pigment, a solvent consisting of diacetone alcohol or an alkyl ether derived from an ethylene or propylene glycol or polyglycol having from 2 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, and a monohydric alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, or acetic, propionic or butyric esters of the said glycols, or mixtures of such solvents, and a combined wetting agent containing (a) soya lecithin, (b) a high temperature condensate of a dialkanolamine, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and a fatty acid with at least 8 carbon atoms in its molecule, and (c) an ester, having a molecular weight between 200 and 400, of polyethylene glycol and a fatty acid with 12 to 18 carbon atoms in its molecule. Pigments mentioned include p phthalocyanine blue and green, ultramarine blue, chromium oxide, iron oxides, natural earth pigments, organic reds and maroons, chrome yellow, titanium dioxide and talc. Examples of the pastes are given, and of their addition to white and inert-pigmented oil paints, styrene-butadiene latex paints, and alkyd resin paints, with all of which they are compatible. In Example 27 the paint comprises titanium dioxide, diatomaceous silica, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, phenyl mercuric borate, soya protein, styrene butadiene latex and water; in Example 28 the titanium dioxide is omitted. In Example 29 an alkyd paint comprises titanium dioxide, diatomaceous silica, calcium carbonate, soya-modified alkyd, odourless mineral spirits, and cobalt tallate drier; Example 30 omits the titanium dioxide.
