937,228. Feeding tobacco. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 15, 1961 [May 16, 1960], No. 17181/60. Class 130. Winnowing apparatus for a cigarette-making machine in which cut tobacco is carried by an airstream as a step in the formation of a tobacco filler comprises a picker roller 4 arranged to remove tobacco from a carded roller 1 and throw it across a first airstream whereby light particles are carried away by the airstream while heavier particles continue to move substantially along their original path and across an opening 18 from which a second airstream issues to separate any remaining light particles from the heavier particles, the residue falling into a box 16. The picked tobacco is thrown across an adjustable plate 6 towards a rotating roller 7 which, with an adjustable guide member 8, forms the entry to a passage 9 up which the light particles travel to a perforated conveyer tape 10, as described in Specification 895,733. Suction is exerted from a chamber 11 and is augmented by a suction box 21, as described in Specification 916,141. A blower 28 is provided and the first airstream is constituted by air passing through a perforated plate 14 over which the picked tobacco is thrown. The heavier particles strike a wall 15 and fall through the opening 18 of the box 16. The box also has a perforated plate 17 through which air flows into the box and upwards through the opening 18 to the passage 9 to constitute the second airstream. The width of the opening 18 can be adjusted by a screw 27.
