Abstract
The invention comprises a compound of the general formula (1): <FORM:0937184/IV(a)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-8 alkyl, an aryl or aralkyl group and X represents a hydrogen atom or a carbobenzyloxy group; a compound of the general formula (II): <FORM:0937184/IV(a)/2> wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a carbobenzyloxy group; a process for the preparation of compounds (I) by reacting a compound (II) with an amine of the general formula RNH2 and reacting the mono-amide thus obtained with acetic anhydride or (in the case where X in formula (I) is hydrogen) reacting 2,5-dicarboethoxypyrrolidine with an amine RNH2 and cyclising the 2-carbethoxy-5-(N-substituted)carbamylpyrrolidine by heat; and a process for the preparation of compounds (II) by hydrogenating 2,5-dicarbethoxy-N-benzylpyrrolidine, hydrolysing the 2,5-dicarbethoxypyrrolidine obtained to form the free di-acid and then reacting the acid with acetic acid or first with benzyl chlorocarbonate and then with acetic anhydride. Compounds (I) (wherein X is hydrogen) may also be prepared from compounds where X is a carbobenzyloxy group by hydrogenolysis.
