Abstract

936,928. Furnaces for heating fluidizable materials. R. L. NEWBY. (Universal Oil Products Co.). May 23, 1961, No. 18527/61. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for uniformly calcining particulate materials, e.g. lime, silica, alumina, comprises a shell 10 divided by a perforated plate 13 into an upper preheating chamber fed by a pipe 11 and a lower hot particle collecting chamber, a vertical fuel burning conduit 20 extending upwardly into the lower chamber and having a fuel line 22, an air line 21 and an external passageway 18 supplying preheated material from the upper chamber. The preheating chamber is subdivided by two perforated plates 14 and 15 into chambers connected by downflow conduits 16 and 17. Particles fed into the flame in the burner conduit 20 are carried by the combustion gases into the collecting chamber, said gases then passing upwardly to sustain fluidized layers on the plates 13, 14 and 15. Particles of e.g. sand, alumina, magnesia, silica, zirconia heated in the above manner may be used as agents for heating a fluid stream. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), particles are transferred by an internal conduit from the preheating chamber to a perforated plate in an additional chamber disposed below the collecting chamber. An open lower end of the fuel burning conduit extends into the layer of particles on this plate which is fluidized by air from a branch duct of the air supply line.
