Abstract
936,168. Feeding webs. CHAMBON Ltd. Sept. 21, 1961 [April 17, 1960], No. 33842/61. Class 100 (1). A method of joining the start end of a reel of reserve web to the web of a substantially exhausted reel of running web which comprises the steps of joining an auxiliary web to the outermost convolution of the reel of reserve web, drawing the auxiliary web along a path parallel with and adjacent the path of the running web past a severing device, severing the running web and reserve web simultaneously after the joint between the auxiliary and reserve web has passed the severing device and joining the severed ends of the running and reserve webs. A two-arm roll support A, Fig. 1, carries running and replacement rolls 4 and 5 on arms 2a, 2b, rotation of these arms being controlled by an electric motor 143. Each arm has a splicing roller 11 for securing an auxiliary web 6 to the leading end of a replacement roll. The roller 11 is normally spaced from the roll periphery by a follower 15a engaging a cam face 17 but is allowed to engage such periphery to effect splicing of webs 5, 6 upon energization of a solenoid 16 which withdraws the cam face 17. The replacement roll 5 is accelerated by belts 29 driven by a shaft 20, the belts passing around a roller 30 on levers 31 pivoted to a lever 19. The lever 19 is actuated by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 35 under the control of a solenoid valve 37 having windings 37a, 37b to move the belts 29 into and out of operative position. Splicing apparatus B, Fig. 4, has rollers 38, 39, 40 and 41 engaging the running web 4a being fed to a machine (not shown). Belts 42 feed the web 6 into the splicing apparatus to tables 51, 52 and discharge rollers 53, 54. Cam-actuated levers 83 carry a counter-blade 88 co-operating with a blade 89 on a rotating cylinder 91. Levers 104 and 122 carry rollers 105, 124 provided with adhesive tape carrier plates 106, 125. In operation, one end of the web 6 is introduced manually into the apparatus B and the leading end of the roll 5 is secured by adhesive tape 146 projecting beyond the leading edge. A start button 150, Fig. 10 (not shown), is depressed manually to initiate the sequence of steps of a web-splicing operation under the control of the electric circuit shown in Fig. 10. The lever 19 is actuated by the cylinder 35 to cause the belt 29 to accelerate the roll 5. The diameter of the roll 4 is sensed by a photoelectric device 154, such that when a predetermined diameter is reached a relay 161, Fig. 10 (not shown), is energized subsequently, causing energization of the motor 23, Fig. 1. After a suitable delay period when the peripheral speed of the roll 5 is approximately equal to the linear speed of the web 4a a contact 156 is closed thereby energizing a relay 162, Fig. 10 (not shown). A photo-electric cell 157, Fig. 1, detects the passage of adhesive tape 146, thereby energizing a relay 163, Fig. 10 (not shown), which energizes a solenoid 64, Fig. 4, to cause rollers 53 and 54 to be pressed together to pull the web 6 through the apparatus B. The solenoid 16 is subsequently energized to cause roller 11 to splice the web 6 to the web 5. A further photo-electric cell 158 detects the presence of adhesive tape 146. A cam-shaft 70, Fig. 10 (not shown), driven by the motor 23 controls the closing of contacts D0, D1, D2 and D3 forming part of the control circuit. Roller 74 is lowered upon energization of solenoid 76, thereby causing feeding of webs 4a and 5. Energization of solenoid 87 causes release of counter-blade 88, thereby severing webs 4a and 5. The leading cut portion of web 4a is then spliced to the cut end of web 5 by the application of adhesive tape effected by tape carrier plates 106 and 125. The web 4a fed by the rollers 132, 40 carries the replacement web 5 into the machine (not shown).
